A roadmap was revealed last Wednesday for Riot Games’ recently released 2XKO. It promises content, quality of life features, and a surprise playable character.
2XKO does not seem to be going anywhere yet. In a recent post on X, a roadmap for Riot’s new fighting game was revealed. It’s got content, quality of life features, and one more character than originally planned. “We’re adding another champion to our schedule, for a total of 6 new champs releasing this year. We’re also adding a new fuse + a way to find duo partners in-game next month.” While this surprise champion’s identity is currently unknown, their existence is appreciated. As 2XKO has been heavily criticized for its small roster of playable characters.
This announcement is hot on the trail of the game’s latest content update, released last Tuesday. If balance adjustments and cosmetics were to be expected, one new feature stands out. The ability to play duos locally. “Local Duo mode is available April 7 on all platforms. Grab a second controller and an IRL friend to duo on the same device and play together online.” A welcome addition, since 2XKO is often at its best when teaming up with a friend. Last but not least, the new patch also introduces a brand new playable champion: Akali. If her character trailer is any indication, she is not above fighting dirty. Good luck blocking her mix-ups.
In February, 2XKO’s fate seemed uncertain. The game’s producer Tom Cannon explained on Riot Games’ X account that their development team’s size had to be reduced. “I want you to know that decision wasn’t made lightly. As we expanded from PC to console, we saw consistent trends in how players were engaging with 2XKO. The game has resonated with a passionate core audience, but overall momentum hasn’t reached the level needed to support a team of this size long term.”
In today’s video game industry, layoffs are common practice. While they do not automatically signify the end of the road for 2XKO, they certainly raise concerns. Fighting game community figurehead Patrick Miller has allegedly been laid off with a 30 minutes notice, after 12 years working at Riot. Despite all this, Tom Cannon does not seem to be giving up. “With a smaller, focused team, we’re going to dig in and make key improvements to the game, including some of the things we’ve already heard you asking for. We’ll share some of our plans soon.” This recently revealed 2026 roadmap seems to be part of said plans.
