Rockstar Games has been hacked again, this time by the notorious hacker group \u201cShinyHunters\u201d who claims to have stolen confidential information from the GTAVI developer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rockstar Games has reportedly been hacked again. The notorious hacker group \u201cShinyHunters\u201d claims to be responsible for the attack, and they have quite the track record. They are known for having targeted juggernauts such as Microsoft, Ticketmaster, and AT&T. According to The Cybersec Guru<\/a>, this hack is the result of a third-party data breach, as analytics platform Anodot which Rockstar uses, is the one to have been directly compromised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ShinyHunters have threatened the Grand Theft Auto VI developer via a message on their website, giving them until April 14 to pay an undisclosed sum. It reads: \u201cRockstar Games, your Snowflake instances were compromised thanks to Anodot.com. Pay or leak. This is a final warning to reach out by 14 Apr 2026 before we leak, along with several annoying (digital) problems that\u2019ll come your way. Make the right decision, don\u2019t be the next headline.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Rockstar spokesperson would later confirm to Kotaku<\/a> the breach has indeed happened: \u201cWe can confirm that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed in connection with a third-party data breach. This incident has no impact on our organization or our players.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cybersec Guru<\/a> explains that ShinyHunters first got into Anodot, stole authentication tokens, and used those to safely enter Snowflake, without having to directly crack the data warehouse\u2019s encryption. Which means that technically speaking, Snowflake did its job as intended. It let ShinyHunters through because they used valid credentials to get in, giving them access to confidential information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unsurprisingly, this is not Rockstar Games\u2019 first rodeo. Grand Theft Auto VI is possibly the most anticipated video game since its predecessor, making the American giant a prime target for cyberattacks. One such attack happened back in 2022, when Rockstar was hacked by an at the time 18-year-old named Arion Kurtaj. The teenager would steal 90 clips of the game\u2019s early-in-development footage, before declaring: \u201cIf Rockstar does not contact me on Telegram within 24 hours I will start releasing the source code\u201d<\/em> the BBC reports<\/a>. He was later sentenced to life in a hospital prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether Rockstar Games will crumble under ShinyHunters\u2019 threats is unknown, and we can only hope none of their employees or customers are impacted in any negative way.
