That is understandable, as there are a lot of games in Capcom’s iconic action-horror franchise. Requiem features two main protagonists: newcomer Grace Ashcroft and fan-favorite Leon S. Kennedy. While understanding our new girl’s story doesn’t require much homework, Leon’s side of the equation makes things more difficult for the uninitiated.

And more importantly, having played Requiem myself as well as most mainline Resident Evil games, I see Requiem as a celebration of the series’ best. A blend of horror and action that Capcom filled to the brim with so much fan service that I cannot recommend it as an entry point, but it will taste all the sweeter if you are familiar with the barrage of references it throws at you. The good news is you don’t need to play through the entire series to do so. Only five, in my opinion, starting with an all-time classic.

Resident Evil

Resident Evil

Released in 1996 for the very first PlayStation console, Resident Evil introduced many to horror games. As the series’ first entry, it has bits of everything we have come to associate it with: zombies, evil pharmaceutical corporations, mansions where puzzles need to be solved to open doors for some reason, memorable characters, and cheesy one-liners. The game lets you choose between two protagonists: Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, who are both members of the special police unit S.T.A.R.S. Bravo team. Originally sent to investigate a gruesome death in a forest neighboring Raccoon City, your mission takes a turn for the worse when you are attacked by a pack of hungry zombie dogs. Terrified and out of your depth, you and your crew have no choice but to hide in the conveniently near “Spencer mansion,” where things will get even more horrifying.

This is where Resident Evil turns into the survival-horror classic it is known to be. Just you by your lonesome, navigating a house of horrors where something could attack you at every turn and where every bullet counts. An experience made all the more claustrophobic by the game’s fixed camera angles. This gameplay loop will feel very familiar when playing through Grace’s sections in Requiem.

It also sets up Oswald E. Spencer and Umbrella as the series’ overarching antagonists, whose evil deeds are felt for years to come. You might be thinking: “But I don’t want to play a 30 years old, low-poly PS1 game.” Don’t worry. Resident Evil was remade in 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube, and this version has since been ported to most modern platforms through an HD re-release. It still looks gorgeous to this day, and if you are to start somewhere, this is it.

Resident Evil 2 Remake

Resident Evil 2 Remake

The sequel to Resident Evil and a fan favorite. This 2019 remake ditches fixed camera angles for an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective popularized by Resident Evil 4, which is, coincidentally, next on our list. This, however, does not take away from its horror factor. Capcom managed to re-capture everything that made the Raccoon City Police Department (RPD) so memorable.

Like its predecessor, you can still choose between two characters when starting a playthrough: Claire Redfield, Chris Redfield’s little sister, and most relevant to this article, Leon S. Kennedy, who, as previously mentioned, returns for Resident Evil Requiem as a battle-hardened veteran. In RE2 however, Leon is anything but. He is a rookie police officer thrust into untold horrors when a zombie outbreak starts on his way to the new job. Forced to take refuge in RPD, he must find a way to escape safely while fighting zombies and solving puzzles. A must-play if you want to understand Leon’s motivations going forward and more of what Requiem references.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Resident Evil 4 Remake

This 2023 reimagining of a classic is my personal favorite Resident Evil game. Resident Evil 4 represents a big shift for Capcom’s horror franchise in both gameplay and tone. When the original released in 2005, it was the first in the series to adopt an over-the-shoulder perspective. With this change came a larger focus on action than horror, but the game still felt tense in all the right ways.

It marks the return of Leon, now a government agent sent on a mission to rescue the U.S. president’s daughter, Ashley Graham, who has been kidnapped by the evil cult “Los Illuminados” and is being held somewhere in rural Spain. The game’s setting has been beautifully re-created for the remake, with minor gameplay additions to keep things fresh. The way Leon fights in Requiem is heavily inspired by RE4 Remake’s combat, so the quicker you get used to it, the better.

Resident Evil 4 Remake’s action gameplay

You could swap this one for the original, and that would be fine, but the reason why I recommend the remake is for continuity’s sake, as Leon’s character is a direct evolution of who he was in the Resident Evil 2 Remake. With that, you are fully caught up on what Mr. Kennedy’s been up to and yes, even though he does come back in Resident Evil 6, I am purposefully ignoring that one.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

Resident Evil 7’s terrifying Baker Family

If you are familiar with the series, this one might seem like a stretch. Its story ties with Requiem might be lighter than 2 and 4, but Resident Evil 7 is an important game to play for different reasons. Released in 2017, it came out at a time when the series was going through an identity crisis, with its predecessor being much more concerned with action than horror. After Resident Evil 6’s mixed reception, something was clear: a return to horror was long overdue.

Resident Evil 7 takes the series back to its roots. You play as new protagonist Ethan Winters, whose search for his missing wife Mia takes him to the fictional town of Dulvey, in Louisiana, USA. Your search quickly stops upon finding her in a seemingly abandoned house, but very soon, you will wish she had stayed missing. Chaos ensues, and you are left to fend for yourself in a terrifying Resident Evil 1-style mansion, with actual evil residents this time.

Resident Evil 7’s first-person perspective immerses you in its horror

From there, a familiar game of navigating through dimly lit corridors and shooting your way past monstrosities begins, only this time, from a first-person perspective, which is a first for the series. This is why it is an important game to play. Not for story reasons, but because it shows how far Resident Evil has come since its beginnings on the PlayStation.

Resident Evil Village

Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters, Resident Evil Village

Since you will play 7, you might as well play this one too. Village is Resident Evil 7’s direct sequel, continuing the Winters saga in a fun, albeit uneven game. Ethan is back, and instead of Mia, it’s his newborn daughter he’s searching for. After the events of RE7, he and his wife have moved to an unnamed region in Eastern Europe, where their child Rose has been kidnapped after the fact. Her trail leads Ethan to a village where werewolf-like creatures thrive, and he has no choice but to brave new horrors to save his daughter.

Resident Evil Village keeps RE7’s first-person perspective but is a little more action-oriented. A spiritual successor to Resident Evil 4, the two games have a lot in common. They both encourage you to fight, they are generous in ammunition, they start in a village, and they both have a merchant who sells you useful stuff. To me, the game’s biggest draw is its gothic horror, which never fails to remind me how much I need another Bloodborne game in my life. Village does start to lose steam towards the end, but it is still worth playing to witness the conclusion to Ethan’s story.

These are, in my eyes, the five Resident Evil games you need to play before Requiem. You could also not listen to me and start the game with no prior experience with the series, but I think you would be doing yourself a disservice in the process. Requiem is not going anywhere, so you might as well first enjoy the games that shaped it into the victory lap it is for both Capcom and Resident Evil fans.

So Resident Evil Requiem caught your eye, but you have never played a Resident Evil game before and are unsure where to start.
